Studying abroad is life-changing. Yes, that’s cliché, but it’s true.
Many years ago, I experienced studying abroad first-hand. Our travel agency wanted to increase the number of travelers to Norway as a destination. To learn more about Norwegian tourism first hand, I packed my bags and set out for Norway to study tourism in university. The idea was that while it was beneficial for the company, I found it to be even more beneficial for myself as a person. While the purpose for being there was academic, I gained much more while living there. Norway is a beautiful country with amazing people and a distinct culture. Living there taught me about a very different way of life, the people who live there, and most of all, myself.
I had a blast visiting both touristy and off-the-beaten-path spots, dogsledding, hiking, fishing, boating, and participating in other local activities. However, the people I met and my memories with them made my time there unique. Studying abroad is an experience that continues to shape my life as a visa consultant today, and something I would recommend to anyone.
Why Study Abroad?
Picking up your life and moving to a foreign country can sound scary.
What if I don’t make friends? What if I make a mistake? It’s cost too much money!
Studying abroad doesn’t have to be scary. Although moving to another country cost money and take some adjustment, the fulfillment and return on investment outweigh the negatives.
Here are a few reasons why I believe you should consider studying abroad:
Practical Learning
Studying abroad gives you an opportunity for hands-on learning in and out of the classroom. Whether you’re taking courses in your field of study or something completely new, you will benefit from different perspectives and ways of learning. This classroom experience in a foreign country is something you wouldn’t have at home.
Personal Growth
When you study abroad, learning isn’t limited to the classroom. You learn a lot about yourself when you travel. You learn more about what you value, improve your communication skills across cultures, and finding new ways of approaching life. You will also become more independent and understanding of other ways of living while abroad.
See the World
The fun part about living in another country is seeing the world! Even if you can only do local travels, you will experience things you wouldn’t back home. Every place has local gems and national treasures to uncover. Take advantage of living abroad to discover these places and create memories to last a lifetime.
Professional Development
Many people worry about the cost of studying abroad. However, this opportunity is an investment that will offer professional benefits for the rest of your life. Most employers look at having studied abroad and international experience favorably, regardless of your profession. The communication, technical, academic, and soft skills you gain will make you more employable and your CV to stand out. Additionally, scholarships and financial aid often help offset the cost, making it a win-win situation.
