We're Just Private People: When a Lack of Evidence Leads to Questions About a Relationship
Recently, a client contacted our office after her visitor visa application was refused. One of the key reasons for the refusal was concerns regarding the genuineness of her relationship.
As we discussed her circumstances, it became clear that she and her partner were simply very private people.
Unlike many couples today, they rarely shared their relationship on social media, did not take many photos together, and preferred to keep their personal lives private. The only evidence they had readily available was a small collection of photographs taken throughout their relationship.
Another challenge was that whenever they had disagreements, she would delete their chat history. While this was simply a personal habit, it meant that years of conversations and communication records were no longer available when evidence of the relationship was needed.
When a Genuine Relationship Has Limited Evidence
Many people are surprised to learn that concerns about the genuineness of a relationship can arise even where the relationship itself is real and ongoing.
The issue is often not whether the relationship exists, but whether there is enough evidence available to demonstrate its history, development, and continuity.
For private couples, this can be particularly challenging.
How We Helped
After carefully reviewing the refusal decision and the client's circumstances, we worked closely with the couple to identify alternative evidence that could demonstrate the genuine nature of their relationship.
Together, we prepared a detailed relationship timeline outlining the history of the relationship, key milestones, visits, and future plans.
We also gathered additional supporting evidence, including:
Photographs covering different periods of the relationship.
Travel records and visit history.
Call logs and communication records that were still available.
Statements explaining the circumstances surrounding the deleted messages.
Supporting declarations from people who knew the couple and could confirm the relationship.
Evidence of ongoing commitment and future intentions together.
Rather than focusing on what was missing, we focused on building a complete and credible picture of the relationship using the evidence that was available.
The Outcome
Following the preparation and submission of a stronger application, the client was ultimately granted her visitor visa. While every case is different and past outcomes do not guarantee future results, this matter demonstrates that a refusal is not always the end of the road.
With proper preparation and the right supporting evidence, it is often possible to address concerns that may have contributed to an earlier refusal.
An Important Lesson for Couples
Being a private person is not a problem. However, keeping some record of your shared experiences can be extremely helpful if you ever need to demonstrate the genuineness of your relationship.
A genuine relationship is built through everyday moments, shared experiences, and ongoing commitment. Having evidence of those moments can make a significant difference when presenting your circumstances.
If you have received a visa refusal due to concerns about the genuineness of your relationship, it is important to understand the reasons for the decision and identify what additional evidence may be available to support a future application.
