Many companies adopt remote-working policies with no geographic requirements restricting where an individuals work takes place. It can be tempting to use this opportunity but unfortunately, you cannot legally work in the United States while on a tourist/business visa (B-1/B-2 visa or ESTA for visa waiver countries).

U.S. B1/B2 are specifically for temporary visits, such as tourism, visiting family and friends, attending business meetings or conferences, and similar activities. They do not authorize you to engage in any form of employment, including remote work for a U.S. company, freelance work, or any other kind of compensated labor. If you wish to work in the United States, even remotely, you generally need a work visa or employment authorization. Some common work visa categories include the H-1B visa, L-1 visa, or E-2 visa, among others. Each of these visas has specific eligibility requirements, and your employer typically plays a significant role in the application process.

Working in the U.S. without the appropriate visa or authorization is considered illegal and can result in serious consequences, including deportation, visa revocation, and difficulties with future U.S. visa applications. Make sure you have the appropriate visa options that align with your employment situation to avoid issues.
